Community charity sells VE Day cakes for RNLI Mablethorpe

The Anderby Creek Community Charity has raised over £90,000 for RNLI Mablethorpe over the last 27 years, including £8,000 last year alone.

Disappointingly, most of the group’s fundraising events have had to be cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, thanks to group member Julie Lake, some funds will still be raised today thanks to her cake stall idea.

Last year - with help from her mum, aunt and grandson - Julie’s delicious cakes raised more than £800 at fundraising events.

On this occasion, however, Julie will provide an assortment of tasty treats on an unattended cake stall just outside her garden.

Local residents can collect an assortment of cakes for their afternoon teas, when they are out on their essential exercise, in exchange for a donation.

No human contact will be involved, in keeping with social distancing rules, and donations will be via an honesty box system.

Julie said: “With our planned fundraising events for the RNLI either cancelled or postponed in the village in 2020, it is important that we try to continue to support this fantastic charity.”

The RNLI is dependant on the efforts of those who tirelessly work to support the institution and its volunteer crews.

The month of May normally sees the RNLI’s annual Mayday fundraising campaign.

However, this year, this vital event in the RNLI calendar has had to be taken online due to the pandemic.

“Fundraising efforts such as this demonstrate the commitment to ourselves that the local community has.

“The kindness and generosity of our fundraisers goes towards training and equipping our crew to enable us to continue our mission to save lives at sea.’
